Ahmed El-Sherif of Leawood was ordered to pay $544,287 as restitution for storing hazardous waste without a license and will serve two years on federal probation.
El-Sherif is the owner of Lenexa-based Beta Chem, which was founded in the mid-1990s. Its facility at 14410 W. 100th St. had been used to synthesize carbon-14 into pharmaceutical compounds.
Kansas officials found extensive radioactive contamination of the laboratory in 2005. That brought state and federal actions against the company.…
