When Unilever announced in August that it sold the Wish-Bone salad dressing brand for $580 million, it set off a mad scramble to try to save the 190 jobs at the plant in Independence, where the product has been produced since 1962.
Ten months later, through the efforts of Gov. Jay Nixon’s office and the Independence Council for Economic Development, Unilever said that it would invest $99 million in upgrades at the plant. That not only will save the existing jobs but result in 70 new hires.
