Alliant Techsystems Inc. plans to split into two separate public companies, one that focuses on defense contracts and another that focuses on the company's sporting goods business, and then merge the defense business with Orbital Sciences Corp.
Alliant Techsystems, also known by its ticker ATK, is the manager of the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, which has about 2,700 employees. It also owns Overland Park-based Bushnell Group Holdings Inc., which has about 1,100 employees.
