That decline in banks with free checking? Blame consumer loyalty

Once a mainstay at most banks, only 29 percent of checking accounts in the United States have no fees today, which is an all-time low, according to the Bank Fees Study by MoneyRates.com. Although that news is bad enough, the fees being charged on those accounts are rising. And because consumers seem content to stay put at their banks despite the trend, the situation probably will be exacerbated. The average monthly maintenance fee being charged rose 11 cents during the past six months to $12.54.…
