New overtime rules that were finalized by the U.S. Department of Labor this week will go into effect on Jan. 1, and a local labor lawyer already is encouraging people not to wait until the last minute to implement them.
The new overtime rules increase the salary threshold for the exemption from paying overtime from $455 per week to $684 per week, or $35,568 a year. If salaried employees are making less than that, they must be paid overtime for any time they work in excess of 40 hours per week.
