Eighty years ago, Milbank Manufacturing Co. got its start making watt-hour gauges that track the electricity used by a home or business. Those gauges were, and remain, the core business of the Kansas City-based manufacturer.
Milbank survived numerous challenges through the decades, but the Great Recession and housing collapse that went along with it got CEO Lavon Winkler thinking about diversification: It isn’t good to be so dependent on one particular product category, he said.
