Employers looking to avoid stumbling into expensive legal troubles should closely watch the U.S. Department of Labor’s proposal to raise the minimum salary required to be exempt from paying overtime.
The DOL plans to raise the threshold for the salaried overtime exemption from the current $23,660 a year ($466 a week) to $35,308 ($679 a week). It will give the public 60 days to comment before potentially making changes and implementing a final rule, expected to become effective Jan. 1.
