General Motors Co. plans to eliminate a shift at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan., because of a decline in sales of the Chevrolet Malibu.
The Fairfax plant runs three shifts and employs 3,400 people. That now will be brought down to two in late September, leading to layoffs, according to plant spokeswoman Mary Padilla. The layoffs will affect about 1,000 jobs.
